Expert Reviews

Expert reviews:

The 2020 BMW X4 offers powerful engine performance, lithe handling, and an upscale cabin with user-friendly features, but it trails the competition in terms of interior space. This luxury compact SUV does not have an overall score or ranking because it hasn’t been fully crash tested.

Pros
Enjoyable ride and handling
Potent turbocharged engines
User-friendly infotainment system
Handsome interior

Cons
Snug rear headroom
Below-average cargo capacity

Fresh off its 2019 redesign, the X4 carries over into 2020 with minimal changes. The biggest news is that the twin-turbo six-cylinder of the M40i gets a serious boost in power, from 355 to 382. Base models add BMW's Comfort Access system as standard equipment. This system allows you to access the vehicle without removing the key fob from your pocket.

Pros
Snazzy exterior design,
good fuel economy,
entertaining driving dynamics from both trim levels.

Cons
Stingy cargo capacity relative to that of rival crossovers,
slim selection of standard driver-assistance features,
Android Auto is conspicuously absent.

No significant changes for 2020.Part of the second X4 generation introduced for 2019.

Pros
Both available engines are smooth, powerful and fuel-efficient
Easy personalization thanks to abundant standard and optional features
Impressive handling for an SUV

Cons
Sloping roofline compromises rear headroom and cargo space
Android Auto is not available
Pricey when fully optioned

The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's #3 ranking is based on its score within the Hybrid and Electric SUVs category. Currently the Toyota Highlander Hybrid has a score of 8.1 out of 10, which is based on our evaluation of 8 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

Pros
Punchy yet efficient hybrid powertrain
Comfortable ride
Upscale interior
Many standard tech and safety features

Cons
Cramped third row
Relatively high starting price

By:

The Highlander is all new for 2020 and is vastly improved compared with the 2019 model it replaces. Next year, a sportier-looking XSE model will join the lineup.

Pros
Handsomely styled,
fuel-sipping hybrid option,
well equipped even at the base level.

Cons
Boring driving dynamics,
snug third-row passenger space,
busy dashboard design

The Highlander is fully redesigned for 2020.Hybrid now uses a four-cylinder instead of a V6.A little less power than before, but much better fuel economy.Part of the fourth Highlander generation introduced for 2020.

Pros
Strong fuel economy estimates of 35-36 mpg combined
Available all-wheel drive for all models
Sensibly priced compared to the non-hybrid Highlander
Plenty of standard and available safety features

Cons
Third-row seats are small, even for kids
Engine noise is noticeably unrefined
Interior design already looks dated
