The 2017 Volvo XC60 ranking is based on its score within the Luxury Compact SUVs category. Currently the Volvo XC60 has a score of 8.3 out of 10 which is based on our evaluation of 71 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 provides a fuel-efficient and powerful engine lineup, a smooth ride, top-notch safety scores, and plenty of space for passengers and cargo. However, many of its rivals offer a lower price, better reliability ratings, and sportier driving dynamics.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 is an excellent choice for drivers who want a comfortable, spacious, and fuel-efficient luxury compact SUV. Its cabin is luxurious, with top-notch materials that match those in pricier rivals. Cargo space is excellent for the class, even topping the amount of usable space in some luxury midsize SUVs.

Pros
Fuel-efficient, powerful engines
Largest overall cargo volume in the class
Top-notch safety scores

Cons
Below-average reliability ratings
Tricky-to-use infotainment system
Pricier than many competitors

The 2017 Volvo XC60 is a near-luxury contender at near-luxury prices. Its safety might be its biggest strong suit, which it rightly deserves.

The XC60's looks have aged in a hurry—inside and out.

The XC60 feels a step behind others in its class, but we're not sure what to blame

Four adults will fit comfortably in the XC60, with all the Ikea they can handle too.

Volvo has earned—and kept—its reputation as one of the safest automakers on the planet.

The options list is fairly comprehensive, but some good features are bundled in pricey packages.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 powertrain lineup is simpler now, but the results are largely the same.

Pros
Superlative safety
Impressive standard equipment
Good ride
Great front seats

Cons
Not particularly efficient
Aged styling
Leg room is limited in rear

Even though the 2017 Volvo XC60 is beginning to show its age, it's still a competitive compact SUV thanks to its top safety scores, spacious interior and solid performance.

For 2017, the Volvo XC60 simplifies its trim level and feature structure. Last year's 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine has been replaced by a turbocharged four-cylinder and all-wheel drive is available across the lineup.

Despite what you might think about an SUV powered by a small four-cylinder engine, the XC60 T5 should be more than adequate for most drivers. If you're regularly loading it to capacity with people and cargo, we recommend the more powerful T6. Fuel economy suffers slightly, but probably not enough to be a deal-breaker. Regardless of engine choice, the eight-speed transmission delivers smooth shifts and the available all-wheel drive makes it a capable handler in cold weather climates.

Pros
The efficient four-cylinder engines are more powerful than you'd think; top safety scores and integrated booster seats make the XC60 a great choice for families; cargo space is generous; all seats provide long-distance comfort.

Cons
Interior design and infotainment system are beginning to show their age; handling isn't as capable as some newer competitors.

Volvo has officially killed off the five-cylinder engine from its lineup with the introduction of a 2.0-liter turbo-four for the T5 AWD variant of the 2017 Volvo XC60. New 18- and 20-inch alloy wheel designs have also been added. All T6 variants now come standard with all-wheel drive.

The 2017 Volvo XC60 is a compact luxury crossover that slots below the larger seven-passenger XC90. Front-wheel drive comes standard with all-wheel drive optional on all but the T6 AWD and T6 R-Design models on which it’s standard.

Look for a second-generation XC60 to debut in the near future riding on Volvo’s new SPA architecture and possibly add a plug-in hybrid variant.

A front-drive XC60 T6 ended up in last place in a comparison test because it suffered from a rough ride because of the large alloy wheels and an interior that didn’t feel well built compared to its competitors. When we later drove the 2016 XC60 with all-wheel drive, we had a more favorable impression.

Pros
Comfortable seats
Spacious interior
Good safety ratings

Cons
Dated infotainment system
Transmission gets confused
Rough ride with larger alloy wheels

From the B-pillar forward, the XC60 could be mistaken for the bigger SUV. The upright fascia houses a similar grille, flanked by high-mounted headlights adorned with Volvo’s Thor’s Hammer sideways-T LED light graphic. The transverse-engine XC60 self-consciously sucks in its front overhang, and the hood traces a relatively straight line to the base of the windshield.

Pros
Classy looks inside and out,
roomier rear seat,
improved handling,
lots of standard equipment.

Cons
Nervous steering,
no front-drive model at launch.

Cons

With the new 2018 XC60, Volvo has cached all the XC90’s good data, and trimmed some fat from its code.

Pros
Superlative safety equipment
Interior is achingly on-trend
Eager turbo-4 performance
Excellent packaging
Plug-in hybrid option

Cons
Exterior’s a little me-too
Lifeless steering in most modes
Hefty in most editions
