Expert Reviews

Expert reviews:

The BMW X6 has powerful engines and a luxurious, high-tech cabin. You’ll forgo some space and practicality versus a BMW X5 though, and spend more doing it.

Pros
SUVs don’t come much quicker
Fantastic infotainment system
Impressive interior quality

Cons
X5 equivalent has better rear headroom
Audi RS Q8 is easier on the eyes
Smaller boot than every alternative

While the regular BMW X6 is in its fourth generation, the high-performance 2020 X6 M has just embarked on its third. It's hard to tell the difference between the all-new model and the one it replaces, but upon closer inspection there are noteworthy improvements. The 2020 iteration is more powerful for one, adding between 33 and 50 horsepower. Its bodywork received a subtle but sharper-looking makeover, and its cabin has been overhauled with a modernized aesthetic and better technology.

Pros
Astonishing performance,
unapologetically brutal design,
long list of standard features.

Cons
Hugely impractical,
limited rear visibility,
thirsty for fuel.

Pros
Massive power from both available engines
Startling acceleration at any speed
Impressive handling performance

Cons

Distinctive styling limits rear headroom and cargo capacity

The GV80 is a brand-new entrant into the mid-size luxury SUV marketplace. It will go on sale in summer 2020 as a 2021 model.

Pros
Lovely interior ambience,
standard high-tech features,
agile handling.

Cons
Cramped third-row passenger space,
no diesel engine for the U.S.,
heavily weighted steering feel.

The gorgeous 2021 Genesis GV80 could pass for a six-figure SUV.

Pros
Handsome exterior
Sumptuous interior
Supremely quiet
Roomy rear seats
Attention to detail

Cons
Console dial confusion
Insecure active lane control
Infotainment dial
Touchscreen distance

The Genesis GV80 is finally on local roads, and it's hard not to be impressed by the new luxury flagship. It's a segment that Genesis needs to succeed in, too.

Pros
Choice of engines and match with eight-speed are excellent
Execution of the design and the cabin is first-rate
Styling provides a real point of difference

Cons
Lane-departure system is a little too enthusiastic on country roads
Two-spoke steering wheel takes some getting used to
Third row is still tight despite the GV80's size
