Ignore the silly falcon doors and the 2020 Tesla Model X is a compelling family electric crossover.

Pros
Stupefying performance
Rides well
Quick, clear 17-inch touchscreen
All-electric powertrain

Cons
Awkward style
Falcon doors are a gimmick
Disappointing interior space
Expensive

It's hard to know exactly what's new on 2020 Model Xs because Tesla, unlike almost every other automaker, makes constant running changes to its products throughout each calendar year. According to a blog post on its consumer site, Tesla touts more efficient electric motors, faster charging via more robust onboard chargers, and a fully adaptive air suspension system. Tesla is also testing a new variant of the Model S—the Model X's sedan cousin—at Germany's famed Nürburgring race course.

Pros
Long driving range,
quick-charging battery,
impressive acceleration.

Cons
Cabin doesn't live up to the price,
gimmicky Falcon Wing doors,
build quality could be better.

This year, the big change to the X5 lineup can be summed up in three words: even more performance. BMW has added a fourth member to the stable, the M50i, which pummels the asphalt with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8—up 67 horsepower and 74 lb-ft from the xDrive50i's similar 4.4-liter V-8. The M50i package includes a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, an M Sport exhaust, bigger brakes, and sportier suspension tuning with adaptive dampers.

Pros
Inspiring engines,
top-notch build quality,
easy-to-use infotainment system.

Cons
Steering feel is in short supply,
third row is for small fry only,
no Android Auto capability.
