We test the high-spec VW Tiguan with four-wheel drive in the UK

Although the VW Tiguan offers an attractive blend of practicality, sharp styling and a classy interior, this particular model doesn’t look like good value. The 188bhp diesel engine is powerful, but it’s not the best fit for the car and economy takes a hit. It’s not as good to drive nor as comfortable as the rival SEAT Ateca either, which puts the high price tag into even sharper focus.

The Volkswagen Tiguan sits in a crowded class of talented cars, with the SEAT Ateca, Peugeot 3008 and Nissan Qashqai all going up against it. Indeed, the Tiguan is such a significant a competitor that many manufacturers position it as the main benchmark in the class that their new models have to beat - be that publicly or privately.

Unfortunately for Volkswagen, the latest model hasn’t quite impressed us as much as we had expected, with rivals overtaking it in many areas. Here we’re giving the Tiguan a chance to fight back by testing this SEL model with the 188bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine to see how it stacks up against the competition.

The Tiguan is pretty good to drive, with plenty of grip and composure in corners, but it does feel heavy and the steering doesn’t have enough feedback. The Ateca is more fun to drive, but the crucial thing is that the SEAT is also more comfortable. The Tiguan we tested had 19-inch alloy wheels fitted, and it crashed over lumps in the road. It’s particularly bad over speed bumps, too - while not back-breaking, it’s disappointing in an SUV from this price bracket.

And there lies this Tiguan’s biggest problem, the price tag. The SEL model costs £33,260, which is significantly more than rivals from Nissan, Renault and SEAT with similar specifications. The quality interior and decent kit list goes some way to mitigate that but we still think the price is just too high.

The size-S Tiguan whets our appetite for our size-L version.

Volkswagen was late to the crossover-SUV game with the first-generation Tiguan, and while 2.8 million examples have been sold worldwide since the model’s launch in 2007, the Tiguan hasn’t been a great success in the United States. American customers have complained about a high price and a lack of space compared with vehicles like the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4—which is why, when the new version of the Tiguan launches here next summer as a 2018 model, we’ll get only the long-wheelbase variant.

Yet, when invited to drive the smaller, standard-wheelbase version of the new Tiguan on its German home turf, we jumped at the chance. That's because its features, powertrain, and road manners will be almost identical to the U.S. car. And distinguishing the long-wheelbase model from its shorter sibling will be almost impossible unless they’re parked next to each other

As much as we like the new Tiguan, we lament the fact that it is actually less powerful than its predecessor. In this European specification, it has all the ingredients to move to the top of the class, with tasteful design, rich materials, and upmarket features. If the Tiguan is to make a lasting impression here, VW needs to offer high levels of technology and convenience features

The 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan is worth checking out if you want your compact crossover to be rewarding to drive. But be aware that it comes up short in many key areas compared to top rivals
.
For 2017, Volkswagen has discontinued the Tiguan's midlevel SE and R-Line trims and replaced them with essentially equivalent Wolfsburg Edition and Sport models. The 6.3-inch touchscreen is now standard, along with VW Car-Net apps and HD and satellite radio.

How does an all-new Volkswagen crossover sound, one that is lighter than the vehicle it replaces, is powered by stronger, more fuel-efficient engines, and has a greater amount of interior space? You get it with the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan ... if you live outside of the United States, that is. Overseas, the Tiguan is new from the ground up, but for now the American Tiguan continues to soldier on, having first been introduced way back in 2009. All of the Tiguan's competitors have been redesigned at least once since then.

Pros
Sporty handling doesn't come at the expense of a comfortable ride quality (except Sport trim)
Engine offers punchy turbocharged performance
Interior materials feel premium
Cabin is quiet at highway speeds.

cons
Limited cargo space and rear seat legroom
Subpar fuel economy
Lackluster crash test results
No high-tech accident avoidance features available.

Among three-row luxury SUVs, the 2017 Volvo XC90 has outstanding cargo capacity, style and safety features. The cabin is particularly elegant and offers many options for personalization. Its engine power and ride quality aren’t segment-leading, but this is still a midsize SUV that deserves consideration.

The 2017 Volvo XC90 receives updates to its driver assistance system and more apps for its infotainment system, plus the addition of a range-topping new trim level.

Although Volvo's latest four-cylinder engine has considerable power, the heavy weight of the XC90 makes it feel unimpressive. Its numbers are promising, but in real-world, day-to-day use, acceleration and refinement are lacking. Other rival crossovers feel notably snappier and more responsive when accelerating up to freeway speeds or passing a slow-moving vehicle. We haven't driven the XC90 with the base turbocharged engine, but we expect to find its 250 hp a bit meager for a vehicle of this size.

Pros
Elegant styling inside and out; spacious second- and third-row seating for a midsize SUV; many standard safety technology features; precise handling that inspires confidence; available plug-in hybrid model.

Cons
Overly busy ride quality for a vehicle in its class; comes up short on performance and real-world fuel economy; some of its standard touchscreen controls can be hard to use.

Totally redesigned for the 2016 model year, the Volvo XC90, helped redefine the Volvo brand, now that the Swedish automaker is Chinese-owned.Worries that innovation would be sucked out of the brand leaving an empty shell appear to have been unwarranted as Volvo is continuing to produce cutting-edge vehicles.

The 2017 Volvo XC90 gets some expanded safety options. Also, the 2017 XC90 T5 model is now offered with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All other XC90 models come standard with all-wheel drive.

Volvo's revived SUV has earned impressive crash-test ratings. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave it five stars overall.Rated Good on each test done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the XC90 was named a Top Safety Pick.

In keeping with the brand's long-standing reputation for safety, Volvo gives the XC90 the latest safety features and systems, active as well as passive, some optional. Automatic braking at intersections has been added to the standard City Safety package. Pedestrian and cyclist detection now functions day or night.

The 2017 Volvo XC90 ranks 10 out of 22 Luxury Midsize SUVs. In a competitive class where esteemed luxury brands duke it out, the 2017 Volvo XC90 lies somewhere in the middle. This Swedish SUV is well-equipped and good on gas, and it seats seven comfortably. However, its standard four-cylinder engine leaves something to be desired, and its reliability rating is lower than most class rivals.

The 2017 Volvo XC90 ranking is based on its score within the Luxury Midsize SUVs category. Currently the Volvo XC90 has a score of 8.6 out of 10 which is based on our evaluation of 25 pieces of research and data elements using various sources.

Its engine power and ride quality aren't segment-leading, but this is still a midsize SUV that deserves consideration." -- Edmunds

After launching one of the most ambitious design overhauls in modern memory, Volvo's XC90 crossover SUV for 2017 utterly validates the Swedish automaker's efforts. … Taking direct aim at the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and Acura MDX, the XC90 offers a fresh design, more intriguing interior toys and a revolutionary drivetrain marking a new beginning in Volvo engineering." -- Kelley Blue Book

"With the redesigned XC90, Volvo is breaking some new ground - ground that will likely influence all of the company's upcoming models. While there are some elements that might throw Volvo's traditional customers (the infotainment controls, mostly), the XC90 not only may lure new customers from other luxury makes, but is also an indication that the long-time Swedish automaker has a very bright future ahead." -- Consumer Guide (2016)

Pros
Luxurious interior design
Excellent cargo and passenger space
High fuel economy
Intuitive infotainment system

Cons
So-so ride quality over rougher roads
Average engine power
Below-average predicted reliability rating

The XC90 is the poster boy of New Volvo, responsible for spearheading the reinvention of the brand as a slick Swedish premium alternative to the established Anglo-Saxon badges you’ll see clogging up most company car parks up and down the land.

It’s a classic top-down approach: Gothenburg’s Chinese masters, Geely, elected to relaunch Volvo with a posh-roader carrying chunky prices and a new executive wardrobe. The rationale? If they get this flagship right, the smaller, cheaper models should fly off the shelves faster than the lunchtime meatballs at the Ikea sale.

Which is why we’ve just eight months in the XC90, to rate their chances. Stuff this up, and it could spell curtains for Volvo’s renaissance outside the Ford fold. Get it right… well, we could be seeing the brand cycle up the sales charts and close the gap to Mercedes-Benz, Audi et al.

It’s a mighty fine cabin. The XC90’s crowning achievement is the bit you’ll notice everyday – the cool, minimalist interior. Materials used throughout are first-rate with a stylish mix of metallics, leather and smart plastics, and the interior felt as solidly made and luxurious as the miles ticked towards five figures as it did on day one. Only the absurdly stained blond leather let the side down (they left a delicate shade of Levis blue).

Like the Audi, the XC90 has permanent four-wheel drive, to keep us going when the going gets slippery, especially with the standard all-seasons Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres. The wheels are 21-inch, eight-spoke diamond-cut alloys – a £1450 option. This excess-all-areas vibe percolates throughout; to avoid a long wait for XC90s off the production line, we plumped for a car already specced by Volvo. Hence the price has been swollen by an obscene £16,440.
