Now that Genesis, Hyundai's luxury brand, has established itself with the G80 and G90 sedans, it's looking to expand its lineup with SUVs. The GV80 Concept gives a peek at what one of those SUVs might look like and what may power it when a production version is ready two years from now.

Beyond showing the intention of building an SUV, the concept's focus falls on its design, which Genesis calls "athletic elegance." Whatever the name, the GV80's proportions compare well to the German, British and Swedish competition the production version will face. We doubt much of the general shape will change, but expect concept details such as the tiny side-view mirrors, perforated trim pieces and 23-inch diameter wheels to be replaced — though we aren't too sad about losing the super-dubs. We do hope the bisected head- and taillights remain because they help give the GV80 a unique identity.

he design language continues into an unapologetically four-seat interior, with a large transmission tunnel-like bulge separating driver and passenger side seats. Although we couldn't get inside, the quilted leather adoring the seats and door panels looked appropriately luxurious, as did the curved, 22-inch-wide OLED display dominating the dash. The screen is divided into separate zones for the driver and passenger and operated by a multifunction controller that supports handwriting recognition. Ahead are four metal strip inlays that act as a design element and capacitive switches for commonly used functions.

The design fits the bill, but what powers it? Genesis says the GV80 Concept has a plug-in hydrogen fuel cell powertrain, and that's the first we've heard of this combination. In application, it could use electricity stored in the battery for primary propulsion and rely on hydrogen as a range extender, converting the gas into electricity to provide power once the battery is low or drained. Technical details were nonexistent, and Genesis representatives say the company is continuing to evaluate the feasibility of this powertrain and others.

Genesis further defines “Athletic Elegance” design language in innovative and high-tech SUV concept
Advanced plug-in hydrogen fuel cell powertrain delivers truly refined performance
‘GV80 Concept’ explores a progressive approach to personal experience

The GV80 Concept is the brand’s first interpretation of a versatile luxury SUV, which strikes a perfect balance between elegance and versatility. On the exterior, this is seen in the concept’s confident posture and athletic prowess, while the spacious interior indulges passengers and immerses them in technology that connects them to the vehicle. Recognizing the brand’s global impact, the GV80 Concept utilizes the latest plug-in hydrogen fuel cell electric technology to combine eco-performance and capability, all skillfully designed to fulfill the needs and explore the escapes of the urban adventurer. Genesis will continue to study the benefits of similar alternative propulsion systems and eco-friendly technologies for future product applications.

“The GV80 Concept is a SUV that alludes to the confidence and evolution of the Genesis brand – its design is timeless, with an understated yet dynamic overall surface complexity,” said Head of Genesis Design, Luc Donckerwolke. “These are all characteristics that embody Genesis products and delicately reflect distinctive elements, which you’ll continue to see in future models from our brand.”

“There is a unique energy and diverse global culture to New York that is fitting for Genesis, and we are excited to unveil the GV80 Concept here,” said Head of Genesis Brand, Manfred Fitzgerald. “This concept is an important milestone for the brand to share our vision of the future, introducing a further expansion of our product portfolio.”

Exterior Design & Inspiration
The GV80 Concept presents a modern and refined interpretation of a capable sport utility vehicle, building on the strength of architecture and the beauty of natural elements. The design team thoughtfully expressed these ideas throughout the exterior and interior of the vehicle in utilizing exceptional materials and purposeful forms to create a feeling of desire. The concept’s overall shape is distinguished by its proportions, finely balanced with dominant surfaces, exhibiting sophistication and functionality that conveys the SUV’s infinite versatility to the driver.

The GV80 is an incredibly important model for Genesis, and its very first luxury SUV packs all the right stuff necessary for the brand's ascension as a luxury marque. If first impressions of the 2020 Genesis GV80 are anything to go by, the fledgling South Korean luxury marque has knocked this oh-so important foray into SUV out of the stadium.

Bold, distinctive character
Gushing with tech and features
Fantastic inline-six turbo-diesel powertrain
A big step forward for the fledgling marque

Cons
Polarising design
No segment leader for space
Diesel seems a bit thirsty
